RESPONSE OF SEED TREATMENT ON GERMINATION, GROWTH, SURVIVABILITY AND ECONOMICS OF DIFFERENT CULTIVARS OF PAPAYA (CARICA PAPAYA L.)

Abstract
Papaya is commercially propagated through seeds and seedlings are raised in the nurseries before transplanting into main field.
However, poor germination of seeds and high mortality rate of papaya seedlings after transplanting restrict the availability of healthy planting material.
In view of this fact, present investigation was conducted in the Department of Horticulture, Allahabad, India during 2004-05. The experiment consisted of two factors, first being the seed treatment viz, KNO3 at 0.2%, urea at 2%, boron at 2 ppm and GA3 at 500 ppm and the second being the cultivars, which included Hybrid Mayuri, Honey Dew and Pusa Nanha.
The seeds were soaked by prolonged-dip method in which seeds were soaked for 12 h in GA3 and KNO3 and 6 h in boron and urea.
The results revealed that the maximum germination (78.50%), seedling height (12.41 cm), number of leaves (7.23), stem diameter (0.27 cm), leaf area (24.84 cm2), survival percentage (84.02), cost-benefit ratio (1:2.7) and minimum days required for completion of germination (15) were recorded in Hybrid Mayuri soaked in gibberellic acid at 500 ppm, while maximum plant spread (11.10 cm) was observed in Hybrid Mayuri soaked in KNO3 at 0.2%.
