Abstract
Root-knot nematode – Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood and reniform nematode – Rotylenchulus reniformis (Linford and Oliveira) were found to be one of the limiting factors in the profitable cultivation of papaya (Carica papaya L.). Use of chemical pesticides for the management of nematodes is expensive, hazardous and not at all sustainable.
Keeping in view these aspects, experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different formulations of bio-pesticides developed at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research for the management of these nematodes on papaya.
Initially experiments were carried out to evaluate the compatibility of Paecilomyces lilacinus and Pseudomonas fluorescens in vitro and in vivo.
After observing that they are compatible with each other, P. lilacinus (106 cfu/g) and P. fluorescens (108 cfu/g) were used to enrich the farm yard manure.
One kg of each of the above mentioned bio-pesticides (formulated and produced at IIHR) + 50 kg of neem or pongamia cake were used to enrich 1 ton of farm yard manure.
Farm yard manure added with these bio-pesticides and neem or pongamia cake was left under shade for a period of 15 days and in between it was mixed thoroughly at an interval of 5 days to enrich it with the bio-agents.
The application of farm yard manure enriched with above mentioned bio-pesticides at the rate of 1 kg/seedling at planting and subsequently four more applications at an interval of 6 months reduced the root population of R. reniformis and M. incognita by 73 and 78% respectively.
They also increased the yield of the papaya (Arka Surya) crop by 26%. The increase in the yield of this crop could be because of the management of nematodes and other pathogens in the rhizosphere of papaya and also because of growth promoting effects of these bio-pesticides.
The rhizospheric competency of these bio-pesticides on papaya was also investigated.
