EFFECT OF PACLOBUTRAZOL (PP333) ON YIELD AND QUALITY OF FRUIT AND LATEX OF PAPAYA VAR. CO 2

Abstract
Paclobutrazol (PP333), an effective anti-gibberellin, has been proved to have profound effect in inducing flowering and fruiting in many fruit crops.
Its effect on papaya needs a deep study as it has a unique growth habit of producing flowers and fruits continuously.
Hence, a study was conducted with CO 2 papaya (dioecious) to find out the effect of PP333 as soil drench coupled with human hair – derived amino acids as foliar spray under recommended dose of fertilizers in Randomized Block Design.
PP333 at two levels viz., 25 and 50 mg a.i./plant was tested along with other treatments.
The study revealed that soil application of 25 mg PP333 and spraying of 0.4% amino acid mixture along with recommended dose of NPK 300:300:300 g/plant/year in six equal splits was found effective in improving economic traits viz., plant, fruit and quality traits, besides yield and quality of latex.
The above dose increased the yield by 63.68 and 118.32% in terms of fruit number and weight respectively.
PP333 was also effective in increasing latex production.
The increase in latex yield with 25 mg of PP333 was 73.33% in warm season and 55.00% in cool season, while the enzyme activity was not much influenced by PP333 which was only 2.22% increase in warm season and 1.56% in cool season over control.
The highest dose of 50 mg PP333 reduced the enzyme activity by 8.07% in warm season and 8.55% in cool season.
PP333 either alone or in combination with amino acids increased total carotenoids, TSS, sugars, ascorbic acid and sugar-acid ratio as compared to control, the response being linear with the increasing concentrations.
