KARYOMORPHOLOGICAL OBSERVATION ON SOME PAPHIOPEDILUM HYBRIDS

Abstract
Paphiopedilum is one of the most popular orchid genera in the world.
Numerous interspecific hybridizations have been made for improving horticultural qualities.
However, the interspecific hybrids often present apparent sterility or low fertility; therefore cytological study is important to deepen our understanding for breeding works.
In this study, we report the karyomorphology of 14 hybrids for the reference to breeding programs.
The basic chromosome number of the genus Paphiopedilum is 2n = 26. The parental species of P. Magic Lantern, P. Vanda M. Pearman, P. Woluwense and P. (Susan Booth × Saint Swithin) belong to the basic chromosome number groups, therefore the somatic chromosome number of each is 2n = 26. In the sections Barbata and Cochlopetalum of subgenus Paphiopedilum, the species have diverse chromosome numbers, ranging from 2n = 28 to 42 and 2n = 30 to 37, and the progenies have a variety of chromosome numbers.
In the present investigation, some hybrids are considered as the polyploidy.
