NEW VARIETIES AND SELECTIONS OF THE HUNGARIAN CHERRY BREEDING PROGRAM

The Hungarian sweet and sour cherry breeding program began in 1950, and has released 12 sweet and 9 sour cherry varieties.
The sweet cherry varieties released in the last 10 years include: ‘Alex’ (1997), ‘Kavics’ (1999), ‘Vera’ (2002), ‘Rita’ (2004), ‘Sándor’ (2004), ‘Petrus’ (2004), ‘Aida’ (2006), ‘Carmen’ (2006), ‘Paulus’ (2008) and ‘Annus’ (‘Anita’) (2010). During this time, there has also been one sour cherry released: ‘Piramis’ (2004), and there is one sour cherry candidate variety: ‘Dukát’.
