NEW RESULTS OF SOUR CHERRY BREEDING IN GERMANY

The main goals in sour cherry breeding are fruit quality, fertility, high and stable fruit set, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress.
Our breeding work has resulted in the new cultivars ‘Jade’ and ‘Achat’ (certified by plant breeders rights in 2004) and ‘Rubellit’ (in 2006). Two new sour cherry cultivars, ‘Coralin’ and ‘Spinell’ were realized in 2010, as well as a pillar growth habit cultivar ‘Jachim’. ‘Coralin’ has a high fruit set and resistance to leaf spot diseases.
Tree growth is upright and the fruit has an abscission zone between the stalk and the fruit, giving a dry stem scar. ‘Spinell’ has large fruit with an excellent sweet sour cherry taste, and therefore is recom¬mended for fresh consumption.
The pillar cherry ‘Jachim’ is characterized by a natural distinctive upright growth with shorter internode length, narrow branch angles and fruit set on short shoots.
This cultivar has good fruit set and quality characteristics, and tolerance to diseases.
