POLLEN VIABILITY AND GERMINATION SUCCESS OF SIX SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS

Abstract
Pollen performance under in vitro conditions is related to its ability to set seeds and fruits following in vivo pollination.
Two in vitro tests commonly used for deter-mination of pollen viability and germination capacity were compared.
The pollen performance of six sweet cherry cultivars (‘Bing’, ‘Gomilicka’, ‘Hedelfinger’, ‘Lambert’, ‘Stonska’ and ‘Tugarka’) was tested using an in vitro pollen germination test and a fluorochromatic reaction test (FCR). Pollen germination ranged from 22% (‘Tugarka’) to 61% (‘Hedelfinger’). The highest germination percentage among tested cultivars was recorded for ‘Hedelfinger’ at 2 h and 24 h after sowing of pollen on germination medium.
The significant differences among pollen viability and germina¬tion ability were recorded for all cultivars except for ‘Hedelfinger’. Higher pollen viability was found with FCR for ‘Tugarka’ (84%) and ‘Bing’ (83%) than for ‘Gomilicka’ (72%), ‘Lambert’ (70%), ‘Hedelfinger’ (69%) and ‘Stonska’ (65%). The pollen germination test indicated significantly lower viability of pollen than FCR.
