Abstract
Several dwarfing clonal rootstocks mostly derived from hybrids of traditional Prunus avium, P. cerasus and P. mahaleb stocks have provided a notable opportunity to move plantings towards medium and high densities in the respective order of 600-800 trees/ha and 1,000-1,300 trees/ha.
The stocks that come with the best recommendations are Gisela 5 and 6, PHL A and C, and dwarfing or semi-dwarfing P. cerasus selections like those of the Weiroot (W) series, Edabriz, CAB 6P and PI-KU 1. We reviewed the recent world rootstock literature, and have supplemented it with data from ongoing trials at Bologna University.
The mortality rate with very dwarfing stocks like Gisela 5 can often be as high as 20-40%. Their environmental adaptability becomes progressively poorer going from Nordic countries to Southern ones.
Even stocks with a greater capacity to adapt to warmer climates, like Gisela 6, require the proper cultivar, planting density and training system.
Furthermore, crop yield depends on tree vigour, photosynthetic efficiency (hence, leaf area and distribu¬tion), and plant nutritional status.
A proper cultivar-stock combination is always key to a successful orchard.
For example, cultivars like Regina grafted to Gisela 6 can achieve greater fruit size, sweetness and firmness than with stocks like W158, which can produce smaller sized fruit.
The performance of clonal stocks of intermediate vigour, such as CAB 6P, has been good in subcalcareous soils.
