POLLEN MORPHOLOGY OF POMEGRANATE (PUNICA GRANATUM L.) FROM DIFFERENT ECO-GEOGRAPHICAL POPULATIONS IN CHINA

Abstract
The pollen morphology of 55 cultivars of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) from eight eco-geographical populations in China was examined by Hitachi S-570 SEM (scanning electron microscope). Cluster analysis was carried out based on observed characteristics, such as pollen size, pollen shape, germinal aperture form and exine ornamentation.
Results were as follows.
The pollen grains were three colpi monads, round or triangle in polar view, prolate (P/E2) spheroid in equatorial view.
Aperture hole membrane form was evagination or no evagination.
Exine ornamentation was psilate with verrucae, micromesh verrucae or scabrate verrucae.
The evolutionary trend was psilate with verrucae, micromesh verrucae to scabrate verrucae.
The result of cluster analysis indicated that the 55 cultivars could be classified into six groups when the similarity coefficient was 3.82. Palynological analysis was basically discordant with the morphological classification and irrelevant with geographical locations.
