PERFORMANCE OF POMEGRANATE IN NORTHERN-KARNATAKA, INDIA

Abstract
Karnataka stands second with respect to area and production in the country with an area of 13,600 ha and production of about 1,42,6000 t.
The district Koppal contributes about 35.62% of the state’s area (4844 ha) and 40.74% of the production (58102 t) whereas Bagalkot district contributes about 12.40% (1687 ha) of the area and 11% of the total production of the state (15691 t). Suitable soil and climatic conditions are responsible for concentration of pomegranate crop area in these two districts.
Further, a major portion of pomegranate is being exported from Koppal and Bagalkot districts of Karnataka.
In Karnataka, the area under pomegranate is growing at a higher rate than that of production and yield, whereas variability was higher in the case of production than that of area and yield.
With respect to Bagalkot district the production of pomegranate was growing at a higher rate than that of area and yield and also variability.
In the case of Koppal also the same trend was seen.
The major strengths in the export of pomegranate are, the production being largely contributed by Maharashtra and Karnataka followed by Indian cultivars being sweet to taste with low acid content and the National Horticulture (NHM) Mission is providing financial support for adoption of good management practices.
The constraints of pomegranate export are weak extension and dissemination of technology.
The opportunities with respect to export are though.
Spain is the biggest exporter of pomegranates in the world, but it does not have the supply during April to July which could be encashed by Karnataka.
Major threats are the severe attack of bacterial blight disease, entry of distant market purchasers at the time of harvesting and problem of chemical residue in the fruits for export and more transportation costs while marketing.
