A STUDY ON DETERMINING THE OPTIMUM THICKNESS AND PLANTING TIME OF POMEGRANATE CUTTINGS IN GREENHOUSE CONDITIONS IN IRAN

Abstract
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a tropical fruit that is cultivated in a considerable area of dry and semi-dry regions in Iran.
The plant propagates easily by hard cuttings, and propagation by cutting is the most common method for vegetative reproduction.
In order to determine an optimum thickness and plant time of the cuttings in greenhouse conditions, as well as, shortening the time of propagation, an experimental research was done in IHECs greenhouses in 2009 and 2010. Cuttings were harvested from pomegranate cultivar Malas from Yazd province, in Iran.
They had same length (about 12 cm) and were divided into three groups: 5 to 8, 8 to 11 and over 11 mm in diameters.
Times of cultivation were: 23 September, 23 October and 22 November (first days of each month of autumn in Iran). The experiment was done in completely randomized design and the results were analyzed by SPSS software.
Results show that cuttings with 8-11 mm thickness had more vegetative growth than two other groups.
Cuttings with over 11 and 5 to
8 mm thickness stand in the second and the third orders of growth, respectively.
Results also show that the stem collection timings had no significant differences between treatments.
According to considerable growth of transplanting cuttings in greenhouse during winter, this method could be a suitable method for shortening the time of propagation of pomegranate.
