Abstract
One of the key features in introducing new ornamental plants is their cold hardiness.
Nine hybrid evergreen Ilex cultivars were introduced from the United States of America and evaluated in Changsha, China for their cold hardiness.
The 2nd and 3rd leaves from the terminal of each cultivar were collected in January 2015 and treated with temperatures of 0, -5, -10, -15, -20, and -25°C. The results showed that LT50 for all nine cultivars was between -14.1 and -34.9°C. As the temperature decreased, the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and soluble protein increased initially and then decreased.
Free proline concentrations were cultivar dependent and increased as temperature decreased, or increased initially and then decreased.
All nine cultivars that were hardy in Changsha and other regions in China refer to their cold hardiness rank as the following: I. glabra ‘Shamrock’ (LT50: -34.9°C) › I. × attenuata ‘Forsteri’ (-25.4°C) › I. crenata ‘Schwoebel Compacta’ (-22.7°C) › I. vomitoria ‘Anna’s Choice’ (-19.6°C) › I. cassine ‘Tensaw’ (-18.8°C) › I. × meserveae ‘Blue Maid’ (-18.2°C) › I. × attenuata ‘Bronze Beauty’ (-17.9°C) › I. vomitoria ‘Oscar’s Dwarf’ (-17.1°C) › I. × attenuata ‘Savannah’ (-14.1°C). The results also were similar to the recommended USDA hardiness zones for each cultivar.
