Abstract
In order to determine an alternative substrate from our own resources, the growth of Ficus benjamina is studied using four different mixtures.
It is found that a mixture of 75% peat + 25% vermiculite (v/v) is the most suitable, with statistical differences for F. benjamina growth (50 cm hight). No differences can be observed between the substrates after repotting and grow up to 75 cm.
Weeping fig demands high levels of easy available water, being this parameter a limiting factor.
It is discussed the results according to volume (%) of easy available water in the substrate and the relation between pot size, available water and water requirements for the crop.
The information provided in this paper may be important for the optimal management of F. benjamina in commercial greenhouses in our weather conditions.
