Abstract
In 1980 we adapted enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect Prunus necrotic ringspot (NRSV) and prune dwarf virus (PDV) in seed of various Prunus species.
Subsequently, this technique was used to determine the incidence of both viruses in all Prunus seed lots, foreign and domestic, that were puchased in 1981 by producers of certified nursery stock in Washington and Montana.
Seed lots of P. avium and P. cerasifera imported from European sources contained between 11 and 56 percent PDV infection while the incidence of PDV in P. mahaleb seed from Europe ranged between 0 and 5 percent.
Only a seed infected with NRSV was detected in any of 28 seed lots of 11 Prunus species from European sources.
While the incidence of PDV found in domestic, noncertified seed lots was lower than that found in European seedlots, the incidence of NRSV was higher; especially in P. avium and P. persica seed.
The incidence of both viruses was less than one percent in certified seed lots of seven Prunus species.
