EXPERIMENTS WITH SHIROFUGEN STUNT VIRUS, A LATENT VIRUS OF SOUR CHERRY

Abstract
An unexpected stunting was observed on Prunus serrulata ‘Shirofugen’ indicator trees after indexing sour cherries for Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRV) and prune dwarf virus (PDV) by the usual Shirofugen test, which is carried out within five weeks.
In the spring following the test a few of the indicator trees developed extremly short shoots with leaves of reduced size.
Within two years the trees declined and died, while their mazzard rootstocks grew strongly.

The disease was transmitted without difficulties to healthy ‘Shirofugen’ by grafting.
This indicated a latent virus of the indexed sour cherries as the causal agent.
In further experiments this virus infected P. avium F 12/1, P. persica and P. serrulata ‘Kanzan’ latently as could be ascertained by retransmissions to ‘Shirofugen’. Repeated experiments, however, to transmit the virus mechanically to cucumber or Chenopodium were unsuccessful.
These results show that the virus is not related to cherry green ring mottle virus, PNRV or PDV. For detecting latent infections of the Shirofugen stunt virus an additional test with one-year-old ‘Shirofugen’ indicator plants is recommended.
