‘UEB I-181/3’ – new ‘Fuji’-derived late apple cultivar with disease resistance

‘UEB I-181/3’ (‘Topaz’בFuji’) is a diploid new selection from the Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i. (IEB), with similar characteristics to ‘Fuji’ but with an earlier ripening period (as ‘Golden Delicious’), higher acidity and natural resistance to diseases such as scab (Venturia inaequalis), powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) and fire blight (Erwinia amylovora). The cultivar has drooping growth habit, medium vigor with good branching and precocious bearing.
It requires light thinning to produce annual crop.
The globose fruit has an attractive deep red to violet blush (80-100%) with weakly defined stripes on a greenish-yellow ground color.
Flesh is cream, firm, with balanced sugar/acid ratio and a very good flavor.
The higher soluble solids and acid content in combination with a good aroma contribute to the high quality of the fruit for the whole storage season.
The flesh shows low enzymatic browning on the cut, making it suitable for processing.
The fruit keeps well in the cold storage and especially in the conditions of the ULO atmosphere.
It is suitable for the fresh market both directly from the tree and from medium- and long-term storage.
The cultivar ‘UEB I-181/3’ is protected by intellectual property right in the EU, USA and Switzerland and can be propagated and cultivated on licensing agreement with the IEB.
