Marker-based identification of potential scab resistance donors in Latvia apple collection

Abstract
Apple is the fourth most popular fruit crop globally and economically the most important in Latvia.
One of the biggest threats to apple cultivation is apple scab, a disease distributed worldwide and caused by the ascomycetous fungus Venturia inaequalis. Scab control heavily relies on intensive fungicide applications, and lately adoption of scab-resistant cultivars, but their cultivation in commercial orchards is still limited.
Most modern scab-resistant apple cultivars are based on the Rvi6 resistance gene, identified in Malus × floribunda 821, which has already been overcome in several European regions.
A solution to this problem is breeding robust resistant apple cultivars containing resistance genes other than Rvi6 and multiple resistance genes The stacking of reisistance genes will increase the durability of the resistances also in large commercial orchards and under favorable environmental conditions for pathogen development.
Germplasm collections could provide suitable sources of new, locally adapted sources of resistance for inclusion in apple scab resistance breeding.
Marker-assisted selection (MAS) enhances the germplasm characterization and breeding process to develop new apple scab-resistant cultivars.
This study included a subset of 89 apple genotypes, which were analyzed using molecular markers associated to known Rvi resistance genes.
The analyzed plant material includes landraces collected throughout the country, introduced cultivars, varieties grown in Latvia for a long time and adapted to local climate conditions, advanced breeding material and resistance gene references.
The genotyping results allowed to tentatively identify eight apple scab resistance genes in the studied germplasm collection.
