The VegSyst-DSS v2 as a recommendation system for nutrient solution composition in greenhouse fertigated, soil-grown vegetable crops

Abstract
The decision support system (DSS) VegSyst-DSS v2 has been developed for nutrient recommendations of several vegetable crops grown in soil in greenhouses in southeastern (SE) Spain using fertigation.
VegSyst-DSS v2, which incorporates the VegSyst v3 simulation model, calculates: i) daily N, P, K, Ca and Mg requirements (in kg ha‑1) considering a N balance (from soil analysis and information on manure applications), the soil available/exchangeable content (from soil analysis) and simulated crop nutrient uptake, and ii) nutrient concentration recommendations for fertigation nutrient solutions.
Recommended concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg (in mmol L‑1) are calculated from simulated uptake of each nutrient and crop evapotranspiration (ETc). The DSS requires information on general soil parameters such as texture and organic matter, and a recent soil nutrient analysis (available P content and exchangeable cations). Theoretical simulations indicate that when considering the soil as a source of nutrients and the simulated nutrient demand of the crop, it is possible to reduce substantially the amounts of nutrients applied.
The VegSyst-DSS v2 for macronutrients has been integrated into the DSS developed in the iGUESS-MED project of the EU PRIMA call.
