Abstract
Climate variability has led to significant phenological shifts in peaches over the last few years.
Peach bud break timing varies from year to year due to fluctuations in seasonal climate conditions during dormancy.
These variations impact orchard management practices and can influence both production and harvest dates.
This research aimed to model the peach dormancy release and the flower progression.
Three peach cultivars were considered in this study.
The prediction of the bud break was assessed using different models that integrate the combination of chill and heat requirements.
Complete chill accumulation varied according to the season evaluated.
A phenological model that considers both chill and heat accumulation is presented for each cultivar.
It was determined that stages during the floral bud progression overlap with each other.
Dormancy release was established for each cultivar and the duration of each stage was modeled and expressed over time in terms of thermal time (GDD). This study identifies the link between chilling accumulation and thermal time in initiating the phenological stages.
It also presents a model for predict the timing of dormancy release and subsequent phenological stages.
These findings provide valuable insights for crop management practices and could support the mitigation of cold damage.
