Abstract
The problem of nitrate pollution of groundwater from agriculture is becoming more and more important.
A potential solution is to use tools such as decision support systems (DSS) or simulation models to optimise fertilisation and irrigation management.
In Europe, several decision support systems (DSS) have been developed for horticultural crops.
In southeastern Spain, VegSyst-DSS, based in VegSyst model, has been developed for vegetable crops grown in Mediterranean greenhouses and is under continuous development to improve it.
The model has also been extended to some outdoor horticultural crops like leafy vegetables and processing tomato.
These DSS can help optimize crop yields and minimize environmental impact.
Therefore, this work aims to extend the model to other important outdoor crops in Extremadura such as sweet pepper.
The parameters necessary to simulate the matter production by the crop and the nitrogen uptake have been calibrated using data obtained in a field trial of processing peppers (Capsicum annuum L., ‘Ramonete Lamuyo’) in outdoor and their subsequent analysis and data processing.
