Effects of two pyroligneous acid products on greenhouse romaine lettuce fresh and dry weights

Abstract
Pyroligneous acids (PA) are a relatively new class of products extracted from organic wastes through pyrolysis.
These materials contain phenols, organic acids, ketones, and other compounds making them possible candidates to enhance plant growth and/or control pests.
The objective of this project was to test the effects of PA extracted from almond shells or pine shavings on plant growth and production of Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. angustifolia) under greenhouse conditions.
Romaine lettuce plants were started from seedlings and grown in 12-L pots filled with a clay loam soil collected from an organic farm in San Luis Obispo, California.
For each product, three concentrations (0.25, 0.50 and 1.00%) of PA were prepared using deionized water and sprayed on plants twice.
An additional control treatment was sprayed with deionized water.
The lowest PA concentration resulted in the greatest plant fresh and dry weights.
Almond PA concentration 0.25% increased lettuce fresh and dry weights by 14 and 16% respectively.
Pine PA concentration 0.25% increased lettuce fresh and dry weight by 17 and 18% respectively.
The higher concentrations were not as effective in increasing crop production.
