Abstract
The growing scarcity and competition for water resources require the urgent implementation of measures to ensure their rational use.
Farmers need affordable irrigation tools that allow them to take advantage of scientific know-how to improve water use efficiency in their common irrigation practices.
The aim of this study is to test, under field conditions and adjust where required, an automated irrigation system that allows the establishment of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategies in a vineyard plot.
For this purpose, a web-based platform (Irri_DesK) using an algorithm that combines water balance-based irrigation scheduling with a capacitive sensor-feedback adjustment mechanism for continuous soil moisture measurement was used.
The trials were conducted in 2021 in Vegas Bajas del Guadiana (Extremadura, Spain) in an experimental plot of Garnacha Blanca vineyard.
Two irrigation treatments were established: control and Irri_DesK (automatic irrigation). Irrigation was scheduled to cover crop water needs in pre-veraison, and from post-veraison until the beginning of leaf fall, it received 41% of the water applied in pre-veraison.
