Abstract
Models of plant architecture considerably boosted the knowledge of interactions and coordination of plant structure, function and environment.
This work will highlight some recent approaches for modelling plant architecture in greenhouses and vineyards.
Both represent temporally and spatially heterogeneous systems.
No two leaves or grapes are exposed to the sun in the same way.
In a vineyard, for example, sunburn damage to grapes is increasingly leading to significant losses in harvest and quality.
The increased occurrence of sunburn during heat waves indicates a potential connection between sunburn and toward climate change.
Reason enough to deal with the causes and possible avoidance strategies – some of them are directly linked to the canopy architecture.
The grower makes strategic decisions such as row orientation and training system, and manages the crop, e.g., by leaf removal during the season, and thereby actively influencing the canopy’s structure.
Plants respond to their environment and with each adaptation and growth, they create new local environmental conditions.
Therefore, the development of strategies to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on crop productivity must consider both, the heterogeneity of the crop and the interactions between grower, climate and crop.
Functional-structural plant models of cucumber in greenhouses and grapevine in vineyards allow us to explore the variability of plant architecture in changing environments and its consequence on plant productivity.
The simulation studies presented will also include examples of different growers’ decisions on plant spacing and leaf removal.
Finally, it will be shown how in-silico experiments using such models can help us to better understand plant performance in future environments.
