Abstract
Lycoris (Amaryllidaceae) is an important bulb flower with high ornamental value and medicinal value.
Due to the unique flower pattern, Lycoris is widely used in landscaping.
But it is difficult to obtain innovative Lycoris germplasm by conventional crossbreeding.
To enrich the ornamental characteristics of Lycoris plants, interspecific and intergeneric hybridization between Lycoris and Hippeastrum was conducted.
Further, endosperm culture, which has been conducted to produce triploid progenies with better ornamental traits in many plants, was adopted in this study to explore if it’s suitable for Lycoris. During this experiment, 298 flowers of Lycoris and 79 flowers of Hippeastrum were pollinated.
The results showed that the average fruit setting rates of Lycoris × Hippeastrum and Hippeastrum × Lycoris were both high, 65.77 and 85.54% respectively.
After 30 days, 67.41% of the ovules of Lycoris × Hippeastrum and 43.39% of the ovules of Hippeastrum × Lycoris enlarged.
One ovule of Hippeastrum × Lycoris regenerated into plants, whose parental combination was HA × L. aurea. But no plants were obtained from reciprocal crosses.
In endosperm culture, two seedlings were obtained in the interspecific hybridization L. aurea × L. tsinlingensis four months after pollination.
This study is of great significance in enriching the germplasm resources of Lycoris. In addition, the successful cases of intergeneric hybridization and endosperm culture of Lycoris are reviewed.
The methods to overcome intergeneric hybridization barriers and the suitable conditions for endosperm culture of Lycoris are discussed.
