Abstract
The herbicide fluridone (1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-trifluoromethyl(phenyl)]-4(1H)-pyridinone) affects many physiological and biochemical processes related to plant growth and development.
It disturbs the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in plants inhibits, the activity of phytoene desaturase, the enzyme responsible for converting phytoene to phytofluene, and indirectly inhibits the biosynthesis of plant hormones such as abscisic acid (ABA) and strigolactones.
Uncooled Muscari armeniacum bulbs with fully differentiated adventitious roots were used for our experiments.
A three-week soaking of the M. armeniacum bulbs in fluridone solutions at concentrations of 5 and 10 mg L‑1 significantly inhibited root growth.
Preliminary analyses showed that fluridone caused the degradation of chlorophyll and carotenoids in M. armeniacum leaves.
Besides, leaves obtained from bulbs treated with fluridone showed a pink color, although fluridone had almost no effect on anthocyanin levels compared to untreated control plants.
Histological analysis showed the presence of anthocyanins only in the leaf parenchyma, but not in the epidermis.
