More than 50% of the total population in Indonesia consist of women, predominantly living in rural areas where they not only play the role of house wives but are also active in the agricultural sector.
They manage their own farms or provide labour to earn a living for their family.
Since these woman are usually uneducated and unskilled, they are badly paid which makes it difficult to improve their quality of life.

By the end of Second PELITA, 70% of the total population of Indonesia was suffering from Anemia/malnutrition; 14% was suffering from calorie – protein – malnutrition and 1.4 % suffered from a vitamine.
A deficiency.
High rates of morbidity and mortality for children under 5 years of age are mostly caused by protein-calorie-malnutrition.

The home yard garden intensification project, supporting the Family Nutrition Improvement Programme (UPGK), is an activity organized bij the Ministry of Agriculture with the objective to support farmers producing their own food of adequate quality for their family.

Extension programmes, coaching and training should enhance the skill and knowledge of women to improve the people’s food habits through the Family Nutrition Improvement Programme (UPGK). UPGK is an integrated programme coordinated by the Ministry of Health.
It’s implementation is integrated among concerned ministries such as the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Home Affairs, based on Presidential Instructions in 1974 and 1979.

After several years of project implementation, there is already a noticable result in the health condition of the families in the project area.
