Abstract
Excessive vegetative growth in the warm subtropical climate of the South African Lowveld results in large trees on most mango varieties, which promoted the evaluation of Cultar for growth suppression.
Two initial soil applications of Cultar were applied at the pre-blossom stage, these treatments being re-applied twelve months later at the same rate.
Shoot elongation was reduced in the first season.
Tree height increase was reduced as was tree canopy diameter increase after 16 months.
Early and uniform blossom were induced in the second and third years of the trial by the use of Cultar.

Name of chemical used : B-[ (4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-a-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ethanol (paclobutrazol).
