PREPLANT TREATMENT OF RADOPHOLUS SIMILIS IN INFESTED BANANA LAND

Abstract
Six treatments were evaluated for the control of Radopholus similis (Cobb) infesting banana soil.
Treatments were a 8 month fallow period, 8 weeks solarisation, cultivation of a resistant crop (Panicum maximum var. trichoglume)(K. Schum.) Eyles) for 4 months, soil fumigation using methylbromide at 100 g/m2, soil fumigation (methylbromide at 35 g/m2) plus solarisation for 8 weeks, nematicide treatment with ebufos (2 g a.i./m2) and untreated control plots.
Treatments commenced directly after removal of infested plants. R. similis populations were determined at monthly intervals during treatments and at 3 monthly intervals following the establishment of new plants.
All treatments except the control treatment reduced R. similis populations prior to planting.
Twelve months following planting, only methyl bromide plus solarisation consistently yielded no R. similis from root and soil samples.
However, the lowest total number of nematodes (including spiral nematodes, Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus spp.) occurred with fumigation with the higher methylbromide dosage.
