Abstract
The aim of a pineapple breeding programme initiated in 1978 in Ivory Coast was to produce new cultivars for fresh and processed market with improved fruit quality (appearance, texture, taste). Hybridizations between the "Cayenne" and "Perolera" cultivars of the species A. comosus allowed a selection among 30 000 hybrids produced every year.
The parent characteristics, the stability of the characters through vegetative propagation, the definition of an adequate selection diagram, and offspring analysis are presented.
Some of the new hybrids are described with their main improved characteristics.
