Abstract
Crop performance, water use efficiency, and salinity control can be improved through comprehensive irrigation scheduling.
Factors which affect irrigation scheduling of pecans (Carya illinoensis K.) were reviewed, and strategies for scheduling discussed.
The factors included weather conditions, evapotranspiration characteristics, water relations, salinity tolerance, soil properties and their spatial variability.
The information currently available is adequate to develop approximate scheduling for some localities.
To develop a comprehensive scheduling model, additional research is needed in the areas of evapotranspiration estimate, water use-yield function, tree responses to water stress at different stages of growth, tree responses to Na, and handling of spatially variable soil properties.
