Abstract
The CAB ABSTRACTS bibliographic database contains some 50 000 records prepared during 1973–93 which relate to herbs, spices and condiments, medicinal, essential oil, pesticidal and poisonous plants.
These were compiled from information published in books, reports, conference proceedings and over 2 500 periodicals in 45 languages.
Over 8 000 cultivated and wild species belonging to some 2 000 genera are covered.
While a substantial number of papers were concerned with species which would be included in more than one of the above five categories, the minimum percentage of papers which could be recognised as being of relevance to the different categories were as follows: medicinal, 52.5%; essential oil, 13.5%; herbs and spices, 12.0%; pesticidal, 11.2%; and poisonous, 10.8%. The volume of literature published annually on various aspects including botany, agronomy, biochemistry, composition, pharmacognosy, biological activity and toxicology of these plants has grown 3- to 4-fold over the past two decades.
