AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CONDITIONS FOR THE RAPID PROPAGATION OF IMPATIENS FLANAGANAE IN-VIVO AND IN-VITRO
Considering its limited distribution, horticultural and medicinal potential, the possibility of propagating the plant both in-vivo and in-vitro was studied.
The lateral shoots induced by light of Impatiens flanaganae proved to be a suitable source for a more efficient vegetative propagation than the natural one via tubers.
The cuttings rooted relatively easily using commercial rooting powder.
Modified Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 2 mg/l Indoleacetic acid (IAA) and 2 mg/l Kinetin was found to be effective for the production of multi-axillary shoots (10 to 12 per explant) in-vitro when apical and lateral shoot tips were used as explants.
Rooting was induced on MS medium containing 1mg/l IAA. Callus was successfully initiated only from leaf explants on both MS and Gamborg’s B-5 media supplemented with vitamins and selected concentrations of IAA and/or 2,4-D in combination with Kinetin.
Current studies are being carried out with respect to plant regeneration from callus.
