Abstract
Leaf temperature was measured on birch plants (Betula pendula Roth.) and apple plants (Malus domestica Borkh.) grown at steady-state under non-limiting nutrient and light conditions.
Steady-state conditions, i.e. constant physiological state, were attained using relative addition rates of nutrients that equalled both relative uptake rate and relative growth rate (Hellgren and Ingestad, 1996). The thermodynamic state of the plants at a constant relative growth rate and a constant physiological state was here represented by leaf temperature.
The temperature stability of individual leaves was studied and estimated for the whole leaf biomass of the plants.
For the whole period the temperature stability for individual leaves and the temperature range for all plants was statistically evaluated to be within ˜1 °C. Temperature stability and range measurements on plants at steady-state constitute data needed for an integrated growth analysis of the thermodynamic state as a non-limiting and limiting condition for plant growth and development.
