FURROW BOTTOM SEEDING UNDER ROW COVER TO ACCELERATE VEGETABLE GROWTH IN A COLD SEASON

Abstract
We developed a new technique called ‘furrow bottom seeding’ under row cover.
In this technique, seeds were sown at the bottom of small furrows under row cover film in unheated greenhouses.
This technique accelerated germination and growth of Brassica campestris var.
Komatsuna in a cold season, especially in a sunny region.
Leaf temperature increased throughout the day, and night soil temperature beneath the furrow increased more compared to conventional seeding techniques.
The effect of furrow bottom seeding was as same as conventional seeding of a 1.2 °C increase in air temperature.
A manually powered seeding machine was developed to carry out furrow bottom seeding.
The technique has been introduced in winter vegetable production in northern Japan.
