Abstract
Conservation of natural resources enjoys high priority in Hungary.
The gene bank of pear cultivars has been located at two sites, Újfehértó and Keszthely.
That parallel on the two opposite parts of the country increases the safety of the work, and a comparison between the two ecologically different sites facilitates the decisions related to the phenological expression of the same genetic determination as well as the assignment of varieties to the proper local conditions.
Both collections maintain 500 items, 36 % of which are Hungarian local varieties as potentially useful also from an international point of view.
The yielding capacity, phenological traits and the main characteristics of the fruits have been registered systematically.
