Abstract
Honeybee visitation was carefully inspected on 13 flowering pear cultivars late morning and afternoon in some days of the blooming.
Some cultivars (e.g.
Lentier doktor, Pringall, Passé Crassane, Miklós) were much more frequented than others while another varieties were much less visited by honeybees (e.g.
Conference, Red Clapp, Abbé Fétel). Strength of wind and proportion of opening flowers seemed to be the most important factors affecting bee activity on pear trees.
Otherwise the intensity of bee visitation was rather similar late morning and afternoon.
Somewhat more honeybees tended to visit the branches at the northern side of the trees than at the Southern one.
Number of flowers visited by bees on branches with the same number of opening flowers differed slightly at different cultivars.
Accordingly, differences in bee visitation of cultivars should be carefully considered in organizing additional honeybee pollination and also in orchard planning.
