THE VARIABILITY OF FRUIT CHARACTERS OF HUNGARIAN LOCAL PEAR CULTIVARS IN DIFFERENT ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

Abstract
The high variability of fruit characters in pears, as a well-known fact is true for the Hungarian local varieties.
At present, fruit characters of as many as 180 cultivars have been processed at two different growing sites.
Effects of site and season upon the morphological traits and upon the chemical composition have been followed up.
Metric data and scale values (steps indicated in brackets) are presented: in the length (6) and diameter (2) of the fruit peduncle, fruit size (6), fruit surface (5), fruit shape (5), color (28) and bloom (6) of the fruit skin, appearance of the lenticels (8), shape and opening of the fruit cavity (8), chemical components (4). Different ecological conditions of the two sites and the seasons are expressed mainly in the shape and the color of the fruits.
The data on the variability of the characters are to be utilized in the safe choice of variety to the right growing site and in the practice of sampling for quality determination.
