Abstract
There is an increasing demand of fruit quality in international markets.
Fruit thinning for pears and apples is a common practice all over the world to obtain better quality and reduce alternate bearing.
In order to improve hand thinning it is necessary to know fruit growth pattern.
Pear fruit growth for cv.
Bartlett and Packham’s Triumph was studied during five years under field conditions, and non linear curves were compared to select a model according to the biological aspects.
For each cultivar, a growth table was elaborated to allow the grower improve hand thinning and leave on the trees only the number of fruits that will be able to reach commercial sizes.
These tables have an additional use: prediction of fruit size distribution at harvest.
