Abstract
Thymus mastichina (L.) L. and Thymus albicans Hoffmanns. & Link are aromatic species largely spread on the arid fields of Algarve, Portugal.
Thymus mastichina (L.) L. ssp. mastichina and Thymus albicans were collected in Alportel and Gambelas lands, respectively, and in different vegetative stages.
The oils from leaves were analyzed by GC and GC-mass spectrometry.
The analysis of T. mastichina oil revealed the presence of several mono- and sesquiterpenes.
The main monoterpene was 1,8-cineole (40–50%) followed by camphor and camphene.
The principal sesquiterpenes were elemol and
-caryophyllene.
The T. albicans oil also revealed the presence of mono- and sesquiterpenes being 1,8- cineole (50–65%) the main monoterpene followed by borneol,
– and
-pinene.
