Abstract
All the European apricot cultivars are susceptible to sharka disease, but differences in symptom expression have been observed.
These various behaviours are under characterisation in order to evaluate the relationship between sharka disease and virus multiplication in leaves.
As far as viral multiplication in leaves is concerned, three major conclusions were drawn from the results.
First, no virus was detected in resistant cultivars.
Second, virus concentration was significantly higher in symptomatic areas than in asymptomatic areas of infected leaves of susceptible cultivars.
Third, significant differences were observed among susceptible cultivars either in symptomatic areas or in asymptomatic areas which suggests that partial barriers to virus multiplication or to short distance movement might exist in susceptible cultivars.
These preliminary results suggest genotype dependant reaction of the plant to virus multiplication.
