THE INFLUENCE OF IN VITRO PROPAGATION ON THE FIELD BEHAVIOUR OF RED RASPBERRY VARIETY ‘NORNA’

Abstract
Plants of ‘Norna’ red raspberry propagated in tissue culture (TC) and from root suckers (ST) were evaluated in field plantings established in 1997 at Pure Horticultural Research Station, in the western part of Latvia.
Observations were made from 1998 through 2000 to determine the influence of in vitro propagation on phenotypic characters, yield and berry weight.
After one year, the level of necrotic plants, number and height of canes were determined.
Winter 1997-1998 was very unfavourable for over-wintering of raspberry and caused damage to the plants.
We observed that 15.4% of conventionally propagated plants were necrotic whereas all plants propagated by tissue culture method survived.
Also cane number and size was increased for TC plants.
Flowering and fruiting behaviour of ‘Norna’ raspberry was not appreciably influenced by propagation method.
However, tissue cultured plants were superior over standard method propagated plants in respect to fruit yield m-2 and weight of berries.
The difference between production methods was higher in 2000, when a large proportion of the raspberry flowers were frozen during spring frosts and the total yield of berries was consequently very low.
The four-year results show a positive influence of tissue culture on the winter hardiness, fruit yield and weight of red raspberry cv. ‘Norna’. No phenotypic abnormalities were observed.
