Abstract
Currant clearwing (Synanthedon tipuliformis) continues to be a prevalent pest of blackcurrants in New Zealand.
Control strategies were developed based on the use of pheromone dispensers and/or application of azinphos-methyl.
New Zealand production has recorded yield declines in mature blocks over the past three seasons, and a number of factors are implicated, but the contribution of Currant clearwing to the decline is underestimated, in spite of evidence to support its role.
Cultivar differences (up to 5-fold) in infestation levels were recorded from the winter dormant periods of 1999 and 2000 in most of the recent cultivar releases.
Differences are discussed in terms of hypotheses for differential reaction, and the prospects for a control strategy based on resistance breeding are considered.
The future direction of research into control of currant clearwing is proposed.
