Abstract
From 1994 -1998 we were able to schedule potted Titan red raspberry to produce fruit in a greenhouse from April through June.
In 1997, Nova and Titan were vernalized at 7°C or 3°C for 6 or 8 weeks, every two weeks from 12 Sept. – 28 Oct.
In Nova, lateral branches developed normally after 6 weeks at 7°C but Titan had not completely broken dormancy after 8 weeks at 3°C. In 1999, Nova and Tulameen, were vernalized at 7°C for 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 weeks on 25 Aug. or 22 Sept. or vernalized in the field for the same periods of time.
Both cultivars had broken dormancy after 5 weeks of 7°C. However, in the 22 Aug. treatment, laterals developed that had not initiated flowers.
These results indicate that it is possible to manipulate summer-fruiting raspberries to crop plants sequentially from early January to late June, but that the timing of flower initiation is crucial for the plants to produce sufficient fruit.
