PROPAGATION AND PRODUCTION OF SMALL FRUITS IN TIERRA DEL FUEGO, ARGENTINA

Tierra del Fuego constitutes the southernmost part of South America.
Insularity and Antarctic influence result in a cold-temperate climate, lacking warm summers.
With the aim of diversifying and expanding the current Patagonian agricultural and cattle production, mainly focused on sheep, the Laboratorio de Propagación y Producción Vegetal, Area de Recursos Agronómicos, (CADIC-CONICET) studied the propagation of native small fruit species and looked at the possibility of culturing native and non-native small fruit species.
Several conventional propagation methods (seeds, cuttings and rhizomes) and in vitro methods (micropropagation and organogenesis) of native fruit species are being studied.
In addition, phenological phases, growth analysis, branch characteristics, pruning effect, fruit yield and time of fruit ripening are being evaluated in native and non-native fruit species.
The results obtained so far have drawn the attention of producers interested in the culture of these small fruits in Austral Patagonia.
