EFFECT OF CONVENTIONAL AND IN-VITRO PROPAGATION ON SELECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF RASPBERRY PLANTS

Abstract
Three different procedures were employed to propagate mother plants of two distinct (summer- and autumn-bearing) raspberry cultivars.
Plants were regener-ated from two different explant types, apical meristem and axillary buds, using in vitro culture methods.
In addition, plants were conventionally propagated by soft-wood cuttings.
After virus tests, these mother plants were propagated by root cut-tings to produce plants for the field test.
The in vitro phase was reduced to the mother plant production only.
During the in vitro phase from the third subculture onwards, there were no significant differences in growth and multiplication rate be-tween the two variants.
Field performance was recorded for five years.
Differences in generative and vegetative behaviour were only observed during the first two years.
Crumbly fruit occurred in all three variants.
The percentage of crumbly fruit varied in the years 1997 and 1998 and between the variants.
Conventionally prop-gated plants were as vigorous as micropropagated plants.
Thus, the propagation procedure seems to be of minor importance if virus free, homogenous plant material of a high quality standard is used.
It can not be concluded that in vitro culture in-creases the amount of crumbly fruit.
