Abstract
The causal agent of powedery mildew of Cucurbits grown in Sardinia (Italy) both in the field and in greenhouse has been identified as Sphaerotheca fuliginea.

Such identification has been possible, besides the basis of the conidial distinctive characters (i.e. presence of the fibrosin bodies, type of germination and shape of the germ tube, biometrical measurements), chiefly owing to the finding for the first time in Italy of the extremely rare ascigerous stage of the fungus on cucumber and gourd.

Cross inoculation trials have shown that no specialization of the pathogen occurs among different cucurbitaceous hosts; furthermore, a statistical research carried out through the analysis of variance has not displayed any significative difference among the conidia of various sources.
