Abstract
In 1998, distribution, fruit properties and productivity was studied in dogrose species growing in the Azerbaijan parts of Great Caucasus.
In the given region, 22 species occurred and 10 out of these, in particular R. canina and R. corymbifera, are common and have high vitamin contents.
The studied rose species were found to grow in habitats with a wide ecological range and different types of plant communities.
The rose species are abundant at lower and middle elevations in the mountainous zones (900-1400 m above sea level). Dogroses usually do not form dense populations, instead they are dispersed over large areas.
The total estimated area occupied with dogroses is more than 6 thousand hectares, with an estimated production of 225 ± 36 tons air dried fruits of which 157 ± 32 tons can be exploited.
In regions where the dogrose plants are most abundant, preserves for protection of biodiversity should be established, and harvest management stations should be set up.
