Abstract
Occurrence of fungi in 25 species of Rosa in Kazakhstan was investigated.
We found a considerable diversity of fungi associated with this genus; 24 species of micromycetes belonging to 18 genera, including 6 ascomycetes, 6 basidiomycetes, and 12 mitosporic fungi. Phragmidium, Sphaerotheca and Marssonina were the dominant genera with high abundance. Phragmidium was present in all locations and associated with all species of Rosa.
The fungi of this genus attacked leaves, stems and fruits of their host plants. Phragmidium was also the genus with the highest number of species: six species were identified with P. disciflorum being the most common. Sphaerotheca pannosa Lev. var. rosae Wor., the rose powdery mildew fungus, was a common pathogen of Rosa species everywhere in Kazakhstan.
Sometimes powdery mildew caused defoliation of susceptible genotypes of roses.
The widespread species Marssonina rosae (Lib.) Died. attacked only senescent leaves of host plants, resulting in radial and stellate black (or purple brown) spots with various sizes.
Like powdery mildew, this disease causes defoliation.
Most other fungi identified were found only occasionally.
