Abstract
Emasculation of flowers for hybrid seed production in roses (Rosa spp.) is generally accomplished by removing anthers from the flowers of the seed parent with the help of a forceps before anther dehiscence.
Production of sufficiently large quantities of hybrid seed is a major problem in crosses between species and selected varieties that have low compatibility.
To overcome this problem, a simple and efficient technique for emasculation was developed.
The efficiency of this ‘round cut method’ (RCM) was compared to the conventional method for emasculation of rose flowers during two years based on crosses between two cultivars of scented roses viz., Rosa damascena and R. bourboniana. The RCM is a simple, cost-effective and time-saving method which is recommended for all rose breeders.
