Abstract
Ornamental roses vary widely in morphology (e.g. flower color and shape, size and vigor) and physiology (e.g. vase life). In an attempt to combine characteristics of garden roses with those of cut flower cultivars, a study was made to determine parameters that can help in the selection of the best parent combinations.
A combining ability index together with clustering of genotypes based on genetic distances, was found to be useful in identifying the optimal parents.
Among the several seed set-related characters studied, number of sinkers/hip contributed highest to the combining ability efficiency of a parent.
